NC in DC is a new, intimate salon series held at Duke in DC, highlighting the powerful impact Duke provides for the state and its residents.

Duke University and the higher education community are regularly driving progress and generating positive impacts in their home states via job creation, improved health outcomes, education and more. Through purposeful partnerships with the government and non-profit and for-profit entities, universities are helping their local communities flourish.

Join us for the next event in the NC in DC series, Purposeful Partnerships to Grow the North Carolina Innovation Ecosystem, to hear how universities contribute to the state’s flourishing innovation pipeline and diverse workforce – ranging from gene editing and therapy to quantum computing.

During this event, panelists from Duke, North Carolina A & T State University, and the North Carolina business community will convene in Washington, DC, to highlight how the community is bolstering a significant fraction of North Carolina’s economy through research translation and commercialization and job creation across all sectors.

Currently, North Carolina ranks 7th in the nation for academic research expenditures. In FY 2022, Duke alone surpassed $1.2 billion in research expenditures and brought in $50 million in direct support for North Carolina vendors. Support from the federal government is crucial for research universities to advance innovation and bring immense value to their local and regional communities.

The panel discussion will be followed by a catered dinner and cocktail reception. Please RSVP by June 14.

Oceanpreneurship: Creating a Vibrant Ecosystem to Scale Ocean Innovation

The ocean economy has long been dominated by large, global companies in traditional industries like oil and gas, shipping and fishing. However, alongside these incumbent industries, there is a rapidly evolving ecosystem of startups using new technologies and business models to solve ocean problems (e.g. coastal resilience, plastic pollution, ecosystem monitoring), and to sustainably use ocean resources to address global challenges (e.g. food security, climate change). In this panel, we will explore this blue innovation landscape and assess how policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs and universities can foster rapid development and large-scale deployment of these exciting solutions.

The Environment and Its Role in Preventing Future Pandemics

In a short period of time, the world has gone through an unbelievable process of acknowledging, responding and acclimating to a global pandemic. Now Congress is working on bipartisan legislation to strengthen the nation’s public health infrastructure and outline its next round of supplemental pandemic aid.

The question of how we can prevent and mitigate the effects of future pandemics has a down-to-earth answer – protect the environment. Duke researchers have discovered key insights about the adverse consequences arising from deforestation and industrial development. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown a light on the important role technology can play in epidemiology and conservation efforts.

In this discussion, panelists will consider the implications environmental conservation and investment has for preventing another spread of pathogens, as well as a long list of other associated societal benefits.
